a quiet day at koukounaries
The next day began as expected, with a slow start and a leisurely breakfast at the hotel. The sky was overcast and the air cooler than we’d imagined, early in the season and still finding its rhythm, so it felt like a good day to explore rather than settle by the pool.
The island’s bus service runs the length of Skiathos, and we decided to ride it all the way to the end of the line at Koukounaries Beach.
The bus was busy, filled mostly with locals heading across the island. We squeezed in among shopping bags, familiar greetings and the quiet choreography of everyday life. It felt reassuring somehow, less like being visitors, more like briefly sharing in the island’s routine.
Deserted beach at Koukounaries
When we arrived, Koukounaries was almost empty. The wide sweep of sand lay pale and undisturbed beneath a heavy sky, the sea calm and muted, its usual sparkle softened by cloud. Pine trees edged the beach, their scent faint but unmistakable, carried on the still air.
With swimming off the agenda, we wandered slowly along the shoreline before settling at the Ocean Beach Bar, its chairs arranged neatly beneath the trees. Coffee replaced cocktails, jackets stayed on, and the beach revealed a different personality, quieter, more contemplative.
What was meant to be a short stop gradually stretched into something longer. Conversation drifted easily across the table, laughter punctuated by the clink of cups. Around us, only a handful of people sat scattered across the sand, giving the place an almost out-of-season intimacy.
Later, we crossed a small wooden bridge nearby, pausing for the inevitable photo before continuing our gentle wander along the small marina. With no pressure to do more, the afternoon unfolded at its own pace, less about where we were, and more about who we were with.

By the time we made our way back, the beach remained largely untouched, the water barely disturbed, the island holding onto its calm. It wasn’t the Skiathos of postcards and peak summer, but it suited the day perfectly.
